One of my all time, most loved, short stories, is 'The Selfish Giant', by Oscar Wilde.
If you have never read a short story before, I would urge you to try this one. It's less than five standard book pages in length and would take a reader of moderate speed about 10 minutes to read.
I am sure you would feel some emotion by the end of the story.

Loved my military career.
40 years service, man and boy from August 1971 to July 2011. Loved it. Would do it all again if I could, only do it better next time.
